News for Parents!

**READING/SPELLING  Our story this week is “Tara and Tiree, Fearless Friends."  We will read this story, as well as other stories and poetry, to reinforce the skill for this week.  Read the story at home this week.  See the "Homework" letter for this week.  Please practice Spelling words AND SENTENCES every night at home! We will check words at school daily.  (The only night we do not write Spelling words is Wednesday night... That is up to parents!) Spelling test will be on FRIDAY.

**There are two parts to doing homework: Doing the work at home, and returning it in the homework pocket of your apple binder. 
 
**LANGUAGE/HANDWRITING
We have learned that sentences MUST have a capital letter at the beginning and correct punctuation at the end.  We will learn about context clues and will review collective nouns.  These nouns name "groups" of people, things, and animals.  For example:  a library of books, a herd of cow, a gaggle of geese, and a school of fish.  Students are learning to use their best handwriting. We will write our first and last name and the date on our papers. I am so proud of your effort!

 

 **MATH
Mountain Math, Addition Facts. We are focusing on comparing numbers in the 100's, 10's, and 1's.  We will use greater than, less than, and equal to "signs."  **Use addition flash cards, games and computer activities to reinforce addition facts. 
 


**SOCIAL SCIENCE
Students are learning about the geographical makeup of our world.  Students will make a "Geography" flip book in class with definitions and illustrations.

We will check words at school daily.  (The only night we do not write Spelling words is Wednesday night... That is up to parents!) Spelling test will be on FRIDAY.

All children need supplies, including zip bags, headphones, and folders when you can find them.  Please do not give up.  We must have folders to stay organized.

We had a fantastic first week!  I love having your child in our class.  We are a "family" and are learning to:  Respect Others, Respect Ourselves, and Respect Property :)

Wow... This week has already been pretty hectic.  A few things for you to know:
*Parents, please send all paperwork and supplies by Wednesday!  I need all of the pertinent forms you took home for open house or when your child enrolled and came to our room. 
*Your child brought home a blue Homeroom letter explaining details about homework and reading passages.  PLEASE do not lose this.

NEWS FOR PARENTS! 

OPEN HOUSE will be on Thursday, August 6th.  You may choose one of two times to come meet with me and get lots of great information about our year!  Come at either 1:00 to 2:00, or from 5:00 to 6:00.  You will get a copy of my PowerPoint to take home and keep for future reference.

May 11 - 21, 2015

NEWS FOR PARENTS!  

Field Day is Wednesday, May 13th.  We will also have "Lunch on the Lawn" in back of the school.  Students will pick up sack lunches and enjoy food and music in the back grassy area and on the pavilion.
 
HONORS DAY is Thursday, May 14th!  We will have hotdogs and fixings in our classroom at 9:00 a.m., then move to the PE room for our ceremony at 10:00!  Thank you to all parents who have sent requested items. 
 
Students may get report cards on Thursday, May 21st.  If you will not be here, you may send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to your teacher and the report will be mailed to you :)
 
We will enjoy "Game Day" in our classroom this Friday!  Bring your favorite board game to share with friends.  This includes card games, too!
 
Next week, beginning on Monday, we will start our Summer Cleaning.  Furniture needs to be moved, and carpet cleared for cleaning.  We will have the drawing for a brand new girl's and boy's bicycle at the last GOTCHA party on the pavilion~~ Wednesday, May 20th!
 
Last day is Thursday, May 21st.  Students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m.  If this changes, I will let you know. 
 
Finally, I would like to thank all of my wonderful students and parents for Teacher Appreciation Week!  You surprised me with so many fantastic notes, cards, gifts, and flowers... I am a very blessed teacher and I love each of you so much!

I hope your family had a wonderful Easter!  We are now down to 34 days left in this school year.... Let's keep working hard! 
 
Speaking of Spring.... our SPRING FLING will be Friday, April 10th!  We are so excited to provide this wonderful family time for all of our students, parents, and friends.  Come join us for all the fun~~~THANK YOU Coosada Elementary PTO :)  THIS Friday from 4:00 to 8:00!  Lots of FOOD and FUN!

WRITE DICTATION SENTENCES EVERY DAY.  Your practice shows when we have our test.
 
**Students must write Spelling words and read AR books at home every single night!
 


**LANGUAGE/HANDWRITING:  This week we will produce, expand, and rearrange simple and compound sentences.

***Test is on Friday.

**MATH   This week we will be using standard and non-standard tools to measure, do work problems using measurement, then begin studying data, charts, and graphs.
 


**SOCIAL SCIENCE
Students are enjoying learning about different types of animals and their characteristics.  This week we are studying mammals.  **ANIMAL PROJECT information is coming home today, Monday, April 6th.  Project is DUE on Thursday, April 16th.
