First Week!

We are almost finished with our first week of school!  Students have all been very busy learning so many new things.  Mrs. Boyer's Good Apples are developing into a really great crop!  As time goes by, we will continue to adjust to being second graders :^)

**Parents, please make sure that you see and initial the Behavior Calendar every night.  It is your child's responsibility to give it to you, and to make sure it is signed.  We will be earning "GOTCHAs" before too much longer, and look forward to our first GOTCHA party.

**Don't forget to send in $5.00 to go toward the cost of Accelerated Reading... Thank you so much for sending back all the many papers that had to be signed during the first week!  A few students had to get another copy of some important paperwork.  Please sign and return those by Friday.

**PTO should be sending out some information very soon... I encourage you to join and help support our school.

**I am so happy to have your family as part of our Coosada Family!  We are off to a great start this year.  Watch for next week's updates beginning Monday morning on this blog.

Welcome to Second Grade!
About Mrs. Boyer
I grew up in Montgomery and graduated from Huntingdon College with a degree in Christian Ed. and Music. After several years of teaching piano lessons at home, I went back to Auburn Montgomery and received a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education. This is my 18th year teaching, 13 of which were in 3rd grade.
Randy and I have been married for 32 years. Our daughter, Lauren, and her husband, Scott Nickerson, live in Valencia, California with their 3 year old daughter, Sarah Grace.   Kevin and his wife, Jordyn, live in Montgomery with their 3 month old baby girl, Madilyn Grace, "Maddie." We also love our church family at Mt. Hebron Baptist, and stay involved with many activities there. My hobbies include playing classical music, reading, and needlework. I am so thankful for the blessings of a wonderful family, and look forward to getting to know each of you better this year!

What can I expect in 2nd Grade?
There are a lot of changes that take place in 2nd grade. In the following slides we will discuss some of these things. My goal as classroom teacher is to prepare your child for curriculum demands and standardized testing that takes place when your child goes to 3rd grade.
Grading
Students will receive grades in the following subjects:
*Reading--- 30% tests/70% daily grades
*Math---50% tests/50% daily grades
*Grammar/Spelling--- 70% Grammar/30% Spelling
Social Science
Computer---No Grades--- We are using "Classworks" for Math and Reading practice
Handwriting
Conduct ---- No Grades--"Comment Lines" on Report Card

*These subjects have weighted grades.
Grading Scale
A----100-90
B-----89-80
C-----79-70
D-----69-60
F---59 and below
Reading Street

Our reading series is set up on a 5 day cycle. This means that we will spend 5 days on each story.
Day 1--- We will introduce the story, the target skills, the spelling words, and the grammar skill.
Day 2--- We will read the story in small groups/skills
Day 3--- We will reread the story/practice skills
Day 4--- We will have our Reading Selection Test
Day 5--- We will have our Spelling and Grammar Tests
*** When we have holidays the tests will not be on Thursdays and Fridays!

Math Matters!!
We will be working on timed speed drills each nine weeks. Students will be given an assessment each week and the top score for the nine weeks will be taken as a grade.
1st nine weeks--- 50 addition test/3 minutes
2nd nine weeks---100 addition test/ 5 min. and
25 subtraction practice/2 min.
3rd nine weeks---50 subtraction test/3 minutes
100 addition review/5 minutes
4th nine weeks---100 subtraction test/5 minutes
100 addition review/5 minutes
We also have county Math Tests: Basic Knowledge; Mid-Quarter; Quarter Benchmark; and Cumulative Review

How to be a "Super Speller"!
Practice writing spelling words on Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, and Day 4 and discuss what the special sounds are in each word. Blend the sounds to sound out the word.
Have your child do his/her spelling homework as assigned!
We are required to give 5 dictation sentences on the weekly test. During the first semester, one point is counted off for each mistake up to five points. During the second semester, if a student makes one mistake, the whole sentence is counted incorrect.
***Hint: These sentences will incorporate the previous week’s spelling words with basic sight words and word wall words.

Classroom Discipline
Praise and "Gotchas" are given for good behavior. Students who make the right choices will often get to visit "The Apple Basket!" We also have a "Friday Treat" for those who have only one or no warnings/checks on the clipboard.
We have three main rules to remember: Respect others, respect yourself, and respect property. Students receive three warnings (checks) for a particular behavior. After that point, the student will receive a "Minor Behavior."
Behavior will be documented every day on the "Behavior Calendar" and sent home in your child’s APPLE binder for you to see and SIGN each night! This is our way of communicating with each other and having your child be held accountable for his/her actions—whether they be good or bad.
I consider the "Behavior Calendar" to be treated as a homework assignment… Again, this is part of learning to be responsible!

Homework
Spelling and Math homework should not exceed 30 minutes per night. (Handbook p. 21)
Day 1--- (Mon.) Read story/ Write spelling words (3 times)
Math **Homework page/Practice facts
Day 2--- (Tues.) Reread story/write Spelling words
Math **Homework page/Practice facts
Day 4--- (Thurs.) Practice spelling words
Math **Homework page/Practice facts
**Homework is excused with a parent’s written note due to illness or family emergency…
**Workbook pages are assigned when a Math skill needs reinforcing at home. We check it together the next day.

Information Packet
Please complete ALL papers that need your signature this evening and place in the folder on your child’s desk.
All other information sheets you may take home and read. This presentation and the Monday newsletter will be part of Mrs. Boyer’s blog. You will find a "Parent Communication Tool" letter in the information packet. By completing this form, I will know who does not have computer access and needs a paper copy of the newsletter.

What is an "Apple" Binder?
Applying Perfect Practical Lessons Everyday
An Apple Binder is your child’s take home binder. It’s purpose is to keep communication with parents open, and to teach your child organizational skills and responsibility. It will include a front pocket for parent information (to keep OR return to me), labeled sheet protectors for rules/signed contract, behavior calendar, homework, Family Times (reading information), and the unit spelling list. Your child will also need a clear pencil pouch to hold any money (snack/lunch) or notes from you.
*All money should be in a sealed envelope or zip bag with your child’s name and what the money is for written on the outside. Put info on checks!

Communication
You MUST send a note for every absence within 3 days. After that, I cannot change an unexcused absence on the computer.
You MUST send a written note for car or bus changes. The office will take calls ONLY in case of an emergency!  If I do not receive a note, then your child will do what he/she normally does in the afternoon.
