WELCOME NEW STUDENTS AND PARENTS!
**First things first! We are pleased to announce that our new principal is Jina Sanders, and new assistant principal is Chad Walls. It is important for us to welcome them to our campus and let them know what a wonderful family we are here at CES! We are very happy that Jaclyn Taylor will continue to be our administrative assistant.
**Next, there are TIME changes this year. Teachers arrive at 7:15 daily, cars unload at 7:20, and tardy bell rings at 7:35. In the afternoons, buses load at 2:35 and car riders release at 2:30. STUDENTS MUST BE PICKED UP FROM SCHOOL BY 2:50 EVERY DAY!
PLEASE remember that students must have WRITTEN changes for transportation every day. You may not send changes by email, and the office will not make changes by phone after 12:00 noon unless there is a dire emergency.
**Our Second Grade Blue Pod Open House will be on Thursday, July 31st. My parents will have two choices regarding time to meet and pick up important information.
You may come from either 1:00 to 2:00, or from 5:00 to 6:00. I will go many new changes happening at CES.
Much more information will be coming to you soon! THIS is the place to check if you want to be kept up to date :)

Welcome
to Second Grade!
About Mrs. Boyer
I grew up in Montgomery and graduated from Huntingdon College with a
degree in Christian Education and Music. After15 years of teaching piano
lessons at home, I went back to Auburn Montgomery and received my Masters
Degree in Early Childhood Education. This is my 22nd year teaching, 14 of which were in 3rd grade.
Randy and I have been married for 35 years. Our daughter, Lauren, and
her husband, Scott, live in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with their 6 year old, Sarah
Grace, and 2 year old, Luke Robert. Our
son, Kevin, and his wife, Jordyn, live in Millbrook with their 3 year old,
Madilyn Grace, and 8 month old, Roman Paul. We also love our church family at
Mt. Hebron Baptist, and stay involved with many activities there. My hobbies include playing the piano,
reading, needlework, and coffee on the patio. I am so thankful for the
blessings of a wonderful family, and look forward to getting to know each of
you better this year!
What can I expect in 2nd Grade?
There are a lot of changes that take
place in 2nd grade.
In the following slides we will discuss some of these things. My goal as classroom teacher is to prepare
your child for curriculum demands and standardized testing that takes place
when your child goes to 3rd
grade.
You will need to check our class
blog for all news and information! No printed newsletter will come home unless
you do not have a computer.

Grading
Students will receive grades in the
following subjects:
*Reading
*Math
*Grammar/Spelling
Social Science~~~ S, N, and U
Computer – Used
for Accelerated Reading, Math and Reading Tests
Grading Scale
A----100-90
B-----89-80
C-----79-70
D-----69-60
F---59 and below
Reading Street
Students will use a weekly story, along with
other literature and poetry to introduce and reinforce particular skills. Your child’s Reading Test will be skill based
rather than based on questions from a single story.
Accelerated Reading is a crucial
part of our reading program at CES.
Students are required to read at home with an adult to prepare for AR
tests taken during the week.
Math Matters!!
We are using the same math curriculum as
last year, and will continue to introduce, practice, and reinforce skills
needed to be prepared for third grade.
Your child will have math homework.
**Students must work on addition and subtraction facts at home! We will practice facts here at school using
flash cards, games, and timed drills. By
the end of the year, students will add and subtract three digit numbers.
How to be a “Super Speller”!
We will practice and discuss what the
special sounds are in each word.
Have your child do his/her spelling
homework as assigned!
Spelling tests on Friday will include specific
words to practice nightly. There will be
two dictation sentences given by the teacher, and three sentences made by the
student.
You will receive one Spelling sheet for
the nine weeks to keep in the Apple Binder.
This sheet will have every spelling word and examples of what to
practice for dictation sentences.
Spelling MUST become a part of your evening routine at home.
Classroom Discipline
Praise and “Gotchas” are given for good
behavior. Students who make the right choices will often get to visit “The
Apple Basket!” We also have a “Friday
Treat” for those who have only one or no warnings/checks on the clipboardJ
We have three main rules to remember:
Respect others, respect yourself, and respect property. Students receive three
warnings (checks) for a particular behavior.
After that point, the student will receive a “Minor Behavior” L.
Behavior will be documented every day on
the “Behavior Calendar” and sent home in your child’s APPLE binder for you to
see and SIGN each night! This is our way
of communicating with each other and having your child be held accountable for
his/her actions—whether they be good or bad.
I consider the “Behavior Calendar” to be
treated as a homework assignment… Again, this is part of learning to be
responsible!
Homework
Spelling and Math homework should not
exceed 30 minutes per night.
Students must practice Spelling words at
home.
It is suggested that you give your child
a “practice test” the day before a test
**Workbook pages are assigned when Math
or Reading skills
need reinforcing at home.
**Homework is excused with a parent’s
written note due to illness or family emergency…
Information Packet
Please complete ALL papers that need your
signature this evening and place in the folder on your child’s desk.
All other information sheets you may take
home and read. This presentation and the Monday newsletter will be part of Mrs.
Boyer’s blog. You will find a “Parent
Communication Tool” letter in the information packet. This will allow me to communicate with you by
email, if necessary.

What is an “Apple” Binder?
Applying Perfect Practical Lessons
Everyday
An Apple Binder is your child’s take home
binder. Its purpose is to keep communication with parents open, and to teach
your child organizational skills and responsibility. It will include a front
pocket for parent information (to keep OR return to me), labeled sheet
protectors for rules/signed contract, behavior calendar, homework, and the nine
weeks spelling list.
*All
money should be in a sealed envelope or zip bag with your child’s name and what
the money is for written on the outside. Put your phone number and “E. Boyer”
on checks!
**ALL TRANSPORTATION CHANGES MUST BE SENT IN WRITING. Put this in the Apple Binder.
**Communication
You
MUST send a note for every absence within 3 days.
After that, I cannot change an unexcused absence on the computer. No
email.
You MUST send a written note for car or
bus changes. The office will not take
calls for changes… ONLY in case of an emergency. If I do not receive a note, then your child
will do what he/she normally does in the afternoon. No email or fax.
