NEWS FOR PARENTS!

READ ACROSS AMERICA WEEK!  DR. SEUSS CELEBRATION!

Monday:  I Am Not Going to Get Up Day ---- Wear PJs!
Tuesday: Fox in Socks Day---------Wear silly socks and Dr. Seuss Shirts
Wednesday: Wacky Wednesday-------------- Wacky clothing
Thursday: Green Eggs and Ham Day--------- Wear Green
Friday:  Cat in the Hat Day -------------------  COSTUME PARADE!!!!
             Dress up as any Dr. Seuss character you choose :)


NO SPELLING TEST THIS WEEK!

Read Across America Night is Tuesday, March 3rd

Parent Survey deadline has been extended due to technical issues.

Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday, March 8th.  Spring forward one hour.

**STUDENT OF THE WEEK: 


**READING/SPELLING:    We will complete the Quarter 3 "Post Test" this week.  The test includes a review of all skills from Quarter 3.


NO Spelling Test this week! 
 
 

**LANGUAGE/HANDWRITING:  We will review and complete Quarter 3 Language Test on Thursday or Friday. This test includes singular possessive nouns, plural possessive nouns, reflexive pronouns, irregular past tense verbs, contractions, using commas, and expanding sentences using adjectives.
 
 


**MATH:  We will finish and test Quarter 3 skills, which include equal shares, fractions, angles, shapes, counting money, telling time, rows/columns, and addition/subtraction problems.

Quarter 3 Math "Post Test" will be on Wednesday or Thursday. 


**SOCIAL SCIENCE
We are continuing our study of different types of weather.  Literature includes "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" and "Pickles to Pittsburgh."

Valentine's Treat!  Our Special Snack will be on Friday, February 13th during snack time.

THANK YOU to all parents who have helped our class :) Please continue to send paper towels and facial tissues as you can.  


 
You have been given a one page list of "High Frequency Words" or "Fry" words to practice for the 3rd quarter.  Your child knows to keep this in his/her Apple Binder.  We are looking for words to be read correctly and fluently~~these are NOT timed.

**Your child will be working towards completing 2 or 3 FASTT MATH lessons this week.



**STUDENT OF THE WEEK


**READING/SPELLING:   Our story for this week is "Helen Keller and the Big Storm."  We will read our story then learn more about the fact and opinion.  Spelling words include vowels using oo, ue, ew, ui.
*DICTATION SENTENCES ~~ (See Spelling page in Apple Binder).
WRITE DICTATION SENTENCES EVERY DAY.  Your practice shows when we have our test.
 
**Students must write Spelling words and read AR books at home every single night!
 


**LANGUAGE/HANDWRITING:  This week we are studying prefixes and suffixes.
***Test is on Friday. 
 
 Handwriting counts!  Please always do your best.

**MATH   This quarter, students will learn about counting money, telling time, and geometric shapes.  **Please continue to count money over $1.00, up to $5.00.  Also, we are using an analog clock (one with hands) to tell time.  Please also begin practicing telling time to the nearest half hour and quarter hour.

 


**SOCIAL SCIENCE
Students are learning about different types of weather and how meteorologists make predictions.

**Your child will complete STAR Reading and STAR Math tests this week.

**We will use the new program, FASTT MATH, several times each week.  (You received a pink letter last Thursday.  Your child's 10-digit number was to be written at the bottom and used for a username and password.)

**READING/SPELLING:   Our story for this week is "The Quilt Story."  We will focus on realistic fiction.  Spelling words include "consonant + le." 
*DICTATION SENTENCES ~~ Write a declarative sentence and an imperative sentence.
**Due to the holiday on Friday, Reading and Spelling Tests will be on THURSDAY!
 
**Students must write Spelling words and read AR books at home every single night!
 
 

**LANGUAGE/HANDWRITING:  This week we are studying singular possessive nouns.  
**Due to the holiday on Friday, Language test will be on THURSDAY!

We will begin our third quarter of school learning how to add and subtract two 3-digit numbers!  Students will learn about geometric shapes, counting money, and telling time.  **Please go ahead and start counting a handful of change on the table at home.  We will start counting quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.  Also, we are using an analog clock (one with hands) to tell time.  Please also begin practicing telling time to the nearest half hour and quarter hour.



 


**SOCIAL SCIENCE
Students will begin the study of our State of Alabama.  We will learn about our state flag, bird, flower, motto, and locate Montgomery, the capital.

Dear Parents and Students,

We have completed our first semester of second grade!  You have worked very hard, and I'm so proud of you.

I hope that each one of you have a blessed Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!  This is the most precious season of the year...and I know you will enjoy special time making memories with your families.

We will come back to school on Tuesday, January 6, 2015.  I'm looking forward to greeting my students then with refreshed smiles on all of our faces!
